Train New York to Washington is the best way to get between cities.
NYC to Washington is the only intercity route in America that is done mostly by train. There are several trains a day (see schedule) that leave from Union Station in downtown Washington and go right to New York City (Penn Station) right in Manhattan. Penn Station in New York is under Madison Square Garden at 33rd St. and 7th Ave. From there you can either catch a subway or cab to anywhere in Manhattan.
The fastest have an X in front of the train number (X-Acela). The first fast train leaves Washington at 3:15 and arrives in NY at 6:44 with four intermediate stops. The trains are run by Amtrak and they have nearly hourly service from Washington to NY. The trip takes around 3hrs. on the "Acela" high-speed trains - but it's not worth it to take the high speed trains in my opinion because the cost is roughly twice as much, 3 and a half hours on the regular trains Northeast Regional
On âAcelaâ they give you a newspaper and a drink and the trains look newer so Washington New York trip is more pleasant.

If you've got enough time in advance, cheap Washington fl ight might be still much cheaper than a train ride.

You can choose to arrive at Baltimore Washington International Airport (BWI) because cheap flights to New York there are often cheaper than those to the areaâs other two major airports.
Southwest.com has special fare from NYC to Baltimore, MD. It is about 40 miles away from Washington 45 minutes down i-95. Take the MARC train(Maryland local train) that connects BWI Airport with Union Station in Washington. Take a free BWI Airport shuttle to the BWI Airport Rail Station. Trip takes 40 min.
It can be quite cheap as long as you research and book in advance.
