   Porto, or Oporto in British, is the old medieval town that lines the River Douro, up the hill. Porto is a marvelous and sunny place to Portugal vacation and romantic getaways in Portugal. This town is one of the oldest European centers. The first Roman settlement on the Douro was known as Portus Cale, and it is from this name that both Porto and Portugal derive. But this was not the first capital. That honor went to Guimaraes, Portugal's oldest city exactly halfway between Porto and the vineyards, about half an hour's drive away.

Porto is a vintage second city there are no great palaces built by the aristocrats. Aristocrats were never tolerated by its inhabitants, mostly powerful merchants. Even the king could not build his own residence here. The traders instead built their own palace: the stock exchange palace. Palacio da Bolsa Porto The Palace of the stock exchange is a historic building of the 19th century. There are daily guided tours. As for me the most beautiful hall is designed complete with gold leaf, in Arabic style.
