May 2017, 21.05 14:30 Queensland Pops Orchestra - Celtic Celebration

Whatever did lovers of all things Celtic do before the Queensland Pops Orchestra came along? Where could you go to hear an extravaganza of music from Scotland, Ireland, Wales and the broader Celtic nations? There’s something about Celtic music – and with each passing year, now more than ever, the QPO brand of Celtic magic continues to receive increasingly heartier unison chants of ‘we want more’.

Once again, here’s your chance to be adventurous and wear your kilt or trews! Another fabulous serving of the very best treasures from one of the world’s richest ethnic music heritages hits the floorboards of QPAC and Toowoomba’s Empire Theatre in 2017. Come with your face painted and hoist your Celtic flags, and join with us in this ever-popular Pops favourite. Featuring dancers from the Thistle Highland Dance Studio and the Watkins Academy of Irish Dance, the orchestra will also be joined by the iconic Irish folk band Murphy’s Pigs, who will warm the cockles of your heart with some typically irresistible tunes. Introducing Sarah Calderwood to the Pops audience, a singer-songwriter flautist who unites classic with contemporary folk and is well known in Celtic band circles. In 2012 her first solo album “As Night Falls” was nominated for an ARIA award and Sarah has recently recorded “You Raise me Up” and other songs by Brendan Graham, with the Australian Girls’ Choir.

Collectively, our guest artists have won a plethora of State and National titles, and are ranked among the very best in the world. Watch them showcase the power, grace and energy that epitomises the great Celtic tradition – and be amazed by the sheer excellence on show. Of course, no Celtic Pops would be complete without a dazzling display of pipes and drums … and we guarantee they’ll have you ‘slaving to the rhythm’ from start to spectacular finish!

June 2017, 27.06 19:30 Fauna, Fragmentation, Fire and Fodder in South West Queensland

Free Brisbane Branch Public Lecture, no need to book: Grazing is an important industry in Queensland, where more than 83% of the state is grazed by domestic stock for the production of meat or fibre. These grazed landscapes are extensive and therefore also important for fauna conservation, but surprisingly there has been only limited research to show this. Ecologist Teresa Eyre and her team have been working in the grazed landscapes of the Brigalow and Mulga Lands bioregions for over 10 years, focussing on small mammals, reptiles and birds. One of the key objectives of the work is to describe how wildlife populations relate with various management activities such as burning, grazing and fragmentation. This presentation will provide a summary on the rich diversity of the grazed landscapes of southwest Queensland, and identify which species are the winners and which species are the more vulnerable losers in these landscapes, and why. Queensland Music Festival, Western Downs Regional Council, Opera Queensland and Russell Pastoral present Opera at Jimbour 2017.

Now one of Queensland’s truly iconic musical performances, Opera at Jimbour attracts audiences in their thousands to the fantastic location of Jimbour Station. Where else can you picnic with a magnificent sandstone mansion in the background, listening to opera!

In 2017, Opera at Jimbour will be a semi-staged presentation of Franz Lehár’s bubbly operetta The Merry Widow (Die Lustige Witwe) featuring the irrepressible Emily Burke in the title role, and Australia’s favourite leading man David Hobson as Count Danilo.

And this year we want you all to sing! Be there for a pre-show rehearsal, learn the words and music, and join in the “Vilia” chorus. Plus you have the chance to waltz the afternoon away in the world’s biggest ballroom!

Pack your picnic basket, warm up your vocal chords, put on your dancing shoes and enjoy your trip to the picturesque Darling Downs. There’s no event quite like Opera at Jimbour.

Gates open 9am
Market stalls 10am – 4pm
Performance starts 2pm (run-time: 2hrs + 20min interval)
You may bring your own picnic, however no BYO alcoholic beverages or glass will be permitted

  September 2017, 22.09 08:00 24 Hours of LeMons - Day/Night Race - Queensland Raceway

You asked for it, so now we bring you Australia’s first 24 Hours of LeMons day/night event! Yes you read this correctly people!
Non-stop 24 hours! We are so excited!

24 Hours of LeMons ‘fever’ has swept through Australia and you have made it very clear you want to suffer continuous punishment for 24 hours none stop! Well now it is a reality!

We have LIMITED GRID POSITIONS for this event at Queensland Raceway 22-23 September 2017 and it’s a first in-first served situation. Secure your team’s position NOW with a deposit of one driver fee and your car entry fee - but your entire team must be paid up 3 months before the event! WHY? There is huge demand for this event, so don’t get weaseled out by a slimy Celica or pipped at the post by a Bogan in a BMW.

Since it’s going to be an all-nighter, we’ll need extra night-vision goggles, nocturnal event staff and bribes to Columbian Coffee Cartels! So the fees for this “Special Event” will be $880 per driver and $660 per car (incl GST).

You will require a few additions to your car so you can drive at night, so we’ll keep you updated. So there you have it folks, a real non-stop day-night LeMons extravaganza…. Should be very interesting…and a HUGE amount of fun.

Registration for this once in a lifetime event is now open!
